Date
01 Jun 2010

Abstract

This UK Department of Transportation document sets out the government's strategy on rail electrification, as proposed under the £1.1bn ($1.6bn) plan to modernise the country's railways and reduce carbon emission.

The document explains the benefits and costs involved in electrifying various routes in the country, as well as the source for the plans funding.

It details the government's rail electrification project, especially for the Great Western Main Line between London, Reading, Oxford, Newbury, Bristol, Cardiff and Swansea, which is slated for completion within eight years.

The document also states the advantage of electric trains over other vehicles, such as diesel-powered trains.

It also discusses the importance of an electrified rail line for UK and the use of this technology vis-a-vis other countries in Europe.
