Beijing–Shanghai Railway to Open One Year Early

17 March 2010

China will open its Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway in 2011, a year ahead of schedule, a senior official from the Ministry of Railways has said.

The 809-mile railway will stop in Ji'nan, Hefei, Nanjing and Xuzhou and is expected to cut the travel time between Beijing and Shanghai from ten hours to four hours.

New bullet trains are under construction to service the line and are expected to reach speeds of 380kph.

The project, which began in April 2008, is worth CNY220.9bn ($32.4bn), according to chinadaily.com.
