Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Rail Approved

11 October 2007

The Chinese Government has approved a new high-speed rail project running between the capital Beijing and Shanghai.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) told US news site Forbes that plans have been approved by the state council.

Trains are expected to run up to 350km/h, reducing travel time between Beijing and Shanghai to less than five hours from the current ten hours.

No construction date has been given.
