India to Invest $8.65bn in Rail Expansion and Revamp

Indian Railways has announced its plan to invest Rs407.45bn ($8.65bn) in 2009–10 to expand and renovate its network across India.

Under the plan, Rs 29.2bn ($600m) will be used to construct seven new lines, Rs 17.5bn ($360m) to convert 17 narrow-gauge lines to broad gauge and Rs 11bn ($230m) to improve passenger amenities.

The money will also be used to overhaul 50 stations and purchase 18,000 new freight wagons. The plan includes building a factory to produce 500 passenger coaches a year.
