[топ]Political background
Following achievement of independence from Ethiopia in 1993, the government moved to revive parts of the former Northern Ethiopia Railway. This 306 km line, linking Ak’ordat with the capital Asmera and the Red Sea port of Mits’iwa has been out of use since 1978. Consultants
have determined that the original alignment could be rehabilitated, and a small fleet of rolling stock rebuilt using existing spare parts.
Initial efforts have been concentrated on two short sections, 5 km at Mits’iwa and a length around Asmera. These will be operated by three locomotives - two diesel and one steam - and a handful of coaches and wagons restored by former railway staff. The aim was to have the 117 km between Mits’iwa and Asmera fully operational by late 1996, but by June 1996 only some 43 km of track had been rebuilt. However, work was reported to be continuing in 1997.
