[топ]Organisation

FENADESAL was formed from two railways which were formerly the property of overseas companies: the Salvador Railway, which passed to the state in 1965 under the name of Ferrocarril de El Salvador (FES); and the International Railways of Central America (IRCA), a railway undertaking that included the railway system and port at CutucOj which was nationalised in 1974 under the name of Ferrocarril Nacional de El Salvador (FENASAL).
The two undertakings were merged under state control in May 1975 (together with the port of Cutuco) and became FENADESAL, which is administered by the port authority СЕРА.

The railway is divided into three districts: District No 1 which comprises San Salvador (the capital) to the port of Cutuco in the east of the country (252 km); District No 2 which runs from San Salvador to the frontier of El Salvador with Guatemala (146 km), and a branch to Santa Ana, in the west of the country (20 km); District No 3 which runs from San Salvador to the port of Acajutla, on the Pacific Ocean (104 km), and includes a branch from Sitio del Nino to Santa Ana in the west (40 km).

[топ]Finance

The railway is heavily subsidised. In 1997 its revenues from passenger and freight traffic and other sources totalled c11.9 million, against total expenditure of c48..1 million.
Investment totalling c3.07 million was planned for 1996, with c1.25 million to be spent on major track improvements, c0.28 million on telecommunications, c0.24 million on computer systems and c1.3 million on a locomotive fuelling facility.

[топ]Passenger operations

By the start of 1996 FENADESAL had ceased to operate passenger services, with the exception of over a short stretch of line between Armenia and Sonsonate, which received some attention by introducing a refurbished railbus which operates four times daily in each direction. On market days in Armenia the railbus is replaced by a mixed train. Occasional services hauled by either steam or diesel traction, mostly for tourist groups, operate between Sonsonate, Armenia and Sitio del Nino.
Improvements to existing lines
A group from Taiwan has expressed interest in upgrading existing track to allow international trains to run through to the port of Cortes in neighbouring Honduras. Ferrovias Guatemala is studying the possibility of reconstructing the international link from San Jeronimo to Zacapa in Guatemala to provide a corridor for international traffic to Mexico, the USA and the port of Puerto Barrios in Guatemala.

[топ]Traction and rolling stock

Operational resources at the end of 1997 totalled: 10 diesel-electric locomotives (plus 2 unserviceable); 1 steam locomotives (plus 1 awaiting restoration); 2 railcars; 16 passenger coaches; 370 freight wagons.
