GE and Norfolk Southern have unveiled a new technology that can increase the average network speed of trains by 10-20% by optimising railroad resources.
A 1mph improvement in velocity can save up to $200m in capital and expenses annually, according to Norfolk Southern.
US-based GE's RailEdge Movement Planner is expected to integrate railroad logistics with traffic control systems to enable the faster movement of freight on existing networks.
The technology can project expected track usage, and improve railroad capacity, velocity and efficiency without laying new track.
Norfolk Southern said it will expand the technology's use to its entire 22-state rail network.
