Canada's Minister of Transport, John Baird, has announced C$600m (US$570m) in funding has been allocated for Ottawa's light rail project.
The total cost for the first phase is estimated at C$2.1bn (US$1.99bn) with C$1.2bn (US$1.14bn) in grants already available to the city.
The first phase of the project is expected to involve a 12km line from Tunney's Pasture to Blair Road, according to ottawacitizen.com.
The project also includes the construction of a tunnel under the Rideau Canal, estimated to cost C$735m (US$699m), and a station near the national war memorial.
