Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company will design and construct the $1bn Lagos Rapid Mass Transit (LRMT) system in Nigeria, which is expected to be operational by 2013.
The LRMT's first phase will consist of blue and red lines, according to engineeringnews.co.za.
The 27 km-long blue line, running from west to east in Lagos, will have 13 stations and is expected to connect with the BRT systems and LRMT's red line, which runs from north to south.
The LRMT trains are expected to run at five-minute intervals during peak hours and 14-minute intervals during off-peak hours.
The system is expected to transport 210,000 commuters a day, peaking at 382,000 a day by 2017.
Canada-based firm CPCS is providing infrastructure development advice for the LRMT project.
Construction work on the project will begin in July this year.
