Nigeria and China Sign $875m Abuja-Kaduna Rail Deal

28 October 2009

The Nigerian Government has signed a deal with state-owned China Civil Engineering Construction to reinstate a section of its railway network.

Work under the $875m deal involves rebuilding the section of the railway between the administrative capital of Abuja and the northern city of Kaduna, which are nearly 200km apart, over the next three years.

The section forms the first phase of the Nigerian railway modernisation project.

Work on the section will be part funded by a concessionary loan of $500m from the Chinese government.
