The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) has sought an additional $16.6m in federal funds for the state's high-speed train project.
The CHSRA has submitted three planning grant applications to the Federal Railroad Administration for the Los Angeles to San Diego and Merced to Sacramento sections of the project.
The funds are expected to be used for service development plans to be completed within the next two years on later-stage portions of the rail project.
The project is expected to enhance mobility, provide intermodal links, reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, and allow smart-growth development at stations.
The project will entail completion of an 800-mile network across the state and will also incorporate the Altamont Rail Corridor project.
Several cities across the state, including Sacramento, Riverside and San Bernardino, have offered to support the state authority's efforts.
The funds are expected to be awarded later this year.
