California to Get Biggest Share of High-Speed Rail Funding

28 January 2010

The US state of California will receive $2.25bn to develop its high-speed rail project, the biggest share out of the 31 states which have together been granted $8bn from the economic stimulus package announced in 2009.

The money will be used to build a $42bn high-speed rail system connecting Anaheim and San Francisco through the San Joaquin Valley.

California is followed by Florida, which has been awarded a $1.3bn grant, and a rail line connecting Chicago and St Louis is to receive $1.1bn, Bloomberg reports.

Overall, 13 new high-speed rail corridors will receive the grant for development or initial construction, with a small portion of the $8bn to go towards improvements in existing rail lines.

Nearly 45 applications requesting $50bn in grants were submitted to the government.
