Malaysia’s MYR12.5bn ($3.8bn) double-track northern railway project is on schedule to be complete by December 2013.
Currently, Gamuda Bhd and MMC Corporation Berhad are laying electrified double-tracks along the 329km route, according to The Star Online.
The new rail network will replace the existing single-line track and connect Ipoh with Padang Besar on Malaysia’s northern border with Thailand.
Contracts for the five-year project were awarded in 2007.
The original deadline was extended in 2012 due to difficulties acquiring land.
Work for the project began in early 2008, since then 540 work packages have been awarded to 310 contractors.
