Rail companies in the UK have seen a surge in passengers looking for alternative transport after air travel was cancelled due to the volcanic eruptions in Iceland.
As of midday GMT no planes were allowed to take off in the UK because of a giant plume of volcanic ash, which has been blown across northern Europe, sitting over airspace and posing a risk to flights.
Virgin Trains saw an extra 2,000 passengers join routes between Glasgow, Scotland and London, while international operator Eurostar claimed it had received thousands of extra reservations, according to the BBC.
Eurostar warned potential passengers that its trains for Friday were already busy due to the demand for April breaks.
The air traffic control service said it was unlikely that any planes would depart before 6pm, and the situation was unlikely to improve in the foreseeable future.
