Delhi Metro Line 5 has opened with the first phase of its automated signalling system developed by Bombardier.
Line 5 runs from Mundka to Inderlok with 14 stations on a 15.2km route, according to domain-b.com.
Cityflow 350, Bombardier's new mass transit technology, includes an automatic train operation that drives the trains and controls the opening and closing of coach doors.
The system also has an automatic turn-back feature enabling trains to reverse automatically at end stations.
It features onboard automatic train protection and automatic train operation, which are displayed in the driver's cab.
The track-to-train communication occurs through audio frequency track circuits, according to domain-b.com.
Primarily designed for metro applications, the system requires only limited action from the train driver.
Bombardier received a €30m ($40.4m) contract to supply the system for lines 5 and 6 of the Delhi Metro in October 2007.
The two routes together cover 38.6km and account for over 30% the Delhi Metro phase-II expansion, which extends the network to the east-west and north-south corridors.
