Following approval from the US Federal Railroad Administration, the Capital Metro Red Line between Austin and Leander, Texas, will begin service on March 22.
The nine-station Red Line will provide an initial service of 19 trains on weekdays, which will be fare-free for at least the first week, according to railwaygazette.com.
Six Stadler GTW 2/6 diesel LRVs that can run at a 35min headway will be operated on the 52km route.
The final cost of the project, which is two years behind schedule, is expected to be $105m.
The line was scheduled to open in late March 2009, but has been indefinitely delayed due to a number of safety and operational issues.
