Belgian Train Missed Stop Signal, Investigators Say

16 February 2010

Officials have said that one of the trains involved in Monday’s fatal Belgian rail accident could have missed a stop signal and rammed into another late-running train.

While the track had been equipped with an emergency braking system to prevent trains running through red lights, the local train was unequipped with the necessary technology, according to Timesonline.co.uk.

The accident, which killed at least 18 and injured over 100 including 30 critically, occurred near the town of Halle during the morning rush hour and left the two trains jack-knifed together.

One of the trains, a Brussels-bound express, was nearly ten minutes late and the second faster train had been given the all-clear to head along Line 96 to the capital.

Investigations are continuing into the accident.
