Botswana, Namibia and South Africa are planning to construct a new railway line connecting the three countries to improve freight transportation.
The project, which is known as the Trans-Kalahari Rail Line, will cost nearly $1.4bn.
The proposed railway will connect Walvis Bay in Namibia through Botswana to the industrialised Gauteng Region in South Africa and will be used to carry coal from mines in Namibia and Botswana, among other bulk cargo.
The pre-feasibility study of the project is scheduled to finish by May 2010.
