GE Powerhaul Enters European Market

11 November 2009

UK rail freight operator Freightliner has received the first two PowerHaul locomotives manufactured by GE.

The deal marks GE Transportation's entry into the UK and European freight market.

The 129t diesel-electric locomotives feature a V16-cylinder, twin-turbo PowerHaul engine, AC individual-axle traction-control technology and dynamic braking, and are designed for greater hauling capacity and lower fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The locomotives emit less carbon per gross-tonne mile moved than electric locomotives, are greener all round and over ten times better than their road equivalent, GE said.
