GCC Railway to Extend to Yemen

22 October 2009

The six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are planning to build a $20–25bn Gulf Arab rail network and have agreed to include Yemen in the network.

The 1,940km railway is planned to connect the six GCC members of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain.

The railway will now be extended to Yemen, which is not a GCC member, over its border with Oman, a UAE official has announced.

The six oil-producing countries are spending over $100bn on the project, expected to be built in a similar way to Europe's high-speed rail system.
