Sudan Plans Rail Expansion to Mombasa

08 October 2009

Southern Sudan is planning to expand its rail network from the capital city of Juba to the port of Mombasa, the country's transport minister has revealed.

The railway would carry oil and minerals from Southern Sudan for export through to the port.

The railway is expected to boost the amount of cargo transported through the post, estimated at nearly 80,000 containers each year.

The rail line would also include the region in the Northern Corridor Transit Transport Authority, as part of a larger plan to allow Southern Sudan to enter the East Africa Community.

The government now plans to earmark $20m for a standard gauge railway line from Juba to Rongai in the next financial budget.
