Swedish Railways to Install Novel Static Frequency Converters

21 May 2009

The Swedish Rail Administration, Banverket, has awarded Siemens Mobility a €33m contract to install six Sitras SFC plus multi-level static frequency converters for traction power supply.

The new converters are compact, environmentally friendly and quiet.

They will convert the three-phase 50Hz current into single-phase traction power, which at 16.7Hz is only a third of the frequency of three-phase current.

Five 17MW power output converters will be installed in Häggvik to supply power to the Greater Stockholm area and one in Eskilstuna.

The contract also includes instrumentation and control equipment, protection and control systems, buildings, and three-phase and single-phase switchgear.

The new static converters will start operating on Swedish railways in 2011.
