Australian Government Under Pressure to Increase Rail Services

18 May 2007

The Australian Public Transport Users Association is pressuring the Victorian Government to increase metropolitan rail services outside of peak periods.

The association wants trains on all lines to run every 15 minutes until late in the evening.

The association's Daniel Bowen says overcrowding is a problem at night and on the weekends.

"There is a lot more you can do with the railway system as it stands now," he said.

"You don't need extra trains or extra track to run more frequent trains outside peak hours.

"We are now seeing crowding in the evenings and on the weekend, so it is important that we boost services right across the board."
