The Tampa-Orlando high-speed rail line in Florida, US, could cost $3bn more than expected, according to a new report.
The research, by non-profit think tank Reason Foundation, shows that the state of Florida may have miscalculated the costs of high-speed rail, and that costs have been underestimated on nine out of every ten passenger rail transportation projects, with overruns averaging 45%.
Concerns about lower ridership numbers on the Tampa-Orlando line were also revealed, as the project is predicted to carry 2.4 million riders annually, two-thirds the ridership on the existing Amtrak Acela Express service.
