US State Commits Funds for High-Speed Rail Line

23 December 2010

The California High-Speed Rail Authority Board in the US has committed $616m for the proposed 520-mile high-speed rail system in the state.

The state has already received $624m in federal funding, which was redirected from the states of Ohio and Wisconsin.

California will receive $5.5bn in funding for the construction of the 120-mile first phase of the project, which will extend southwards to connect the Central Valley’s urban centres Bakersfield and Fresno.

The authority is looking to plan for high-speed rail stations across the entire state including Merced, Bakersfield, Gilroy, San Jose and Los Angeles.

Earlier this month, the authority selected a 65-mile stretch through the Central Valley to begin construction of California's high-speed rail line, which will connect the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and beyond.
