Westinghouse Rail Systems Limited (WRSL) has successfully completed the commissioning of Phase 1a of the North Erewash project.
The project has operated under Network Rail's 'hub and spoke' contract arrangements for the East Midlands re-signalling portfolio, and is the first of the major Type A signalling projects to be delivered; as such, it represents a significant milestone for the industry.
Central to the project was the installation of a new WESTCAD control system, together with a train describer and four SSIs at Trent PSB. 99 LED signals were commissioned as well as 32 point ends, 145 axle counters and five track circuits. Two level crossings have been converted to manually controlled barriers protected by CCTV, resulting in the closure of two gate boxes.
Phase 1B of the project, which will see implementation of similar technology, is due for commissioning in September 2008. This will see the implementation of the signalling control of the scheme, along with the re-control of Phase1a from Trent PSB - based in the new East Midlands Control Centre at Derby. The Control Centre is being populated with WESTCAD control desks as part of WRSL’s Type E contract with Network Rail.
