Westinghouse Helps Fans Train for European Championships

01 June 2004

Westinghouse Rail Systems Limited (WRSL) announced today the successful completion of the final phase of the Oporto phase IV project, Portugal, which was undertaken in partnership with sister company, Dimetronic Signals.

The completion of this section of the railway - which extends from Oporto city to the new football stadiums in the North of the country - is good news for football fans intending to travel to the European Football championships taking place this summer. The reduced journey times and new services from Oporto to the North of Portugal will give advantages to commuters travelling to and from the City.

WRSL worked closely with sister company Dimetronic, and Portuguese rail company, REFER, to install the final three new SSI interlockings and a new signalling infrastructure within a short timeframe.

The completion of this part of the Oporto IV project, which comprises 16km of double tracked rail between Braga and Nine stations, marks the end of a 15 month intensive modernisation programme that has included the commissioning of new 12 SSIs over the project duration.

SSI technology has been adapted to meet the operational and functional requirements of Portuguese railways and continues to be an effective and reliable signalling system solution for main line rail application. Portugal is the second highest World-wide user of SSI with currently 97 SSI’s in service, commissioned by the WRSL/Dimetronic partnership over the last 14 years.

“Our team has worked hard to deliver this project on time and within budget,” said John Cotton, Westinghouse Rail Systems’ Managing Director. “The success of the project is a result of hard work, in-depth knowledge of both the project and the industry, and, importantly, a close relationship between all the partners in the project.”
