Melvelle Equipment is a family-run business, formed in 2007 as a succession of Melvelle Engineering.

Railway track maintenance products

Melvelle specialises in the design and manufacture of lightweight high-powered products, principally for railway track maintenance, earth drilling and investigation drilling rigs, and hydraulic power packs ranging from 5hp to 30hp in both petrol and diesel, as well as other sundry products.

We have some 250 products and variations at present, with a range of new products being prototyped, tested, field-trialled, and finally released as an ongoing development programme. The products typically reflect the practical nature of simple maintenance, robust construction and outstanding performance.

Rail weld shears and spike pullers

We offer rail weld shear in a variety of models ranging from standard light weight, tram and crane rail. Each model can be powered by hand pump mounted on the shears or by a remote petrol or diesel power pack.

We also offer spike pullers, which pull both lock and dog spikes from all grades of wooden sleepers. With 8t of pulling power, even well-rusted dog spikes in swollen Australian hardwood are no match for the Melvelle spike puller. There are now several jaw housings available, including the original and still popular swivel foot.

Rail grinders with fast-cut grinding wheels

Melvelle’s rail profile grinders are supplied with a proven fast-cut grinding wheel for maximum bite into the rail and a high cutting rate. The grinder has wide-set rail rollers to achieve the smoothest finish possible.

Flange rollers assist in supporting the weight of the grinder when grinding the rail face. Diesel engines are modified at Melvelle Equipment to operate at high tilt angles and give a much greater staying power under load than similar sized petrol engines.
