Horizontal lathes for axle rough and finish turning

DRS possesses rough and finish four-axis heavy-duty horizontal lathes, made of mehanite cast iron, which are capable of dry and hard machining of axles. They have a very high power and high-dimensioned spindle sleeve.

Cylindrical grinders for axle grinding

DRS' heavy-duty single and double wheelhead grinder is designed for high production and accuracy. Multi-diameter in-process jagging is available.

Wheelset hub-boring machine and systems

The DRS high precision hub-boring machine, equipped with a high accuracy boring bar, can be linked with an axle measuring system to perform machining pairs.

Floor-type travelling column milling machine

DRS' floor-type travelling column milling machine allows the machining operation to be carried out in dry conditions, with the bogie being clamped in vertical position. This technique offers several important advantages:

• Enables a substantial increase in productivity of around 30%, in comparison with gantry-type milling machines
• Enables swarf to be removed by gravity, without interfering in the machine process, thus increasing the tool's life
• Eliminates the need to clean the chassis before painting

In order to perform the complete machining process, the solution provided has an automatic head-change system that enables the most appropriate spindle to be selected automatically for each operation.

In addition to the machining, special attention is paid to the clamping and handling systems. Bracket-based clamping systems enable pendulum operation (with the machine's longitudinal travel being divided into a number of different working positions). As a result, the machine does not need to be stopped for loading / unloading operations and can machine one bogie while a second is loaded / unloaded.
