Wagon Derailment at Kovdor Station of the October Railway on January 10, 2025
On January 10, 2025, during shunting operations at the Kovdor railway station of the October Railway, five empty freight cars derailed. There were no injuries, and repairs have been completed. The cause and circumstances of the derailment are being investigated.
The Murmansk Investigative Department for Transport of the Western Municipal Transport Directorate of the Russian Federation has completed its criminal investigation into the former railway station duty officer. He is accused of committing a crime under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Russian Criminal Code (violation of safety rules for the movement and operation of railway transport by a person obligated by virtue of their work and position to comply with these rules, if these actions negligently resulted in major damage).
➡️The investigation established that the accused, who was obligated by virtue of his position to comply with railway safety and operating regulations, failed to take measures to correct a faulty switch and allowed a train to travel along the damaged section of track. As a result, on January 10, 2025, during shunting operations at the Kovdor station of the October Railway in Kovdor, Murmansk Oblast, the wheels of five freight cars on the shunting train derailed. The incident resulted in significant damage to the car lease holders totaling over 3 million rubles.
��♀️During the investigation, investigators from the Western Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation conducted a large number of investigative and procedural actions, interviewed witnesses, and conducted a railway forensic examination. The collected materials formed the basis of the indictment, which, after approval by the prosecutor, was sent to court for consideration on the merits.
