The gauge of wakefulness of the engineman (ИБМ) executes the continuous control of level of vigilance of the engineman on parametres of electric resistance of a skin (ЭСК). ИБМ can work as self-supporting, and together with other safety controls (Л-132, УКБМ, Jl-143, Л-168).
At actuation ИБМ of type Л-164 the scheme ensures the continuous control of level of wakefulness of the engineman at all fires of an engineman's indicator. When works gauge L-164, feed circuit ЭПК understands and the whistle is distributed. If the engineman does not press during 6-7 about the upper acknowledging contact, there will be an emergency braking. If after pressing on upper РБ at the engineman required level of wakefulness, the gauge through 3—5 with again is not repaired disassembles feed circuit ЭПК, and the engineman will be forced to press again upper РБ. ИБМ does not cancel single-valued checks of vigilance of the engineman at any change of fires with an engineman's indicator, except change with the green.

Principle of operation ИБМ is grounded on effect of change of two components ЭСК. At decrease in level of wakefulness of the person (development of drowsy condition) the slow (tonic) component is increased, and particular oscillations fast (фазической) a component damp. And except oscillation frequency decrease, the time interval between two next oscillations increases.
Gauge L-164 allows to monitor continuously changes of amplitude and an interpulse interval of physical component ЭСК, thereby fixing development at the engineman of pre-drowsy condition.
Information pick up is executed by means of sensors L-167 representing two thimbles, dressed on pins of any hand. Owing to significant individual differences in level ЭСК (20 кОм—2 the MO) is required to have in the booster of unit L-164 system of automatic support of stress on sensors (1) and on a unit exit. By means of a band filter from a received signal component ЭСК which oscillations constitute not less than 1 % of general level ЭСК is outlined фазическая.
The analysis of measured interpulse oscillations is executed by a logic part of the unit with a kit of four numerators. If in the course of the account the signal фазической a component vanishes (becomes below resolving power of the device) that testifies to development at the engineman of drowsy condition) through 60 with the ambassador of incoming of last impulse numerators act the intermediate unit which ruptures a chain of stop valve ЭПК. In reply to a submitted warning signal the engineman is obliged to press upper РБ. Thus there is short-time [(4±1) with] "reset" of numerators and circuit closing ЭПК. If during this time numerators will not fix impulse occurrence фазической constituting as reactions to a warning signal, chain ЭПК again is ruptured. Thereby the capability of recovery of the scheme is excluded by reflex pressing on РБ.
At acceptance of the locomotive the engineman actuates ИБМ the tumbler switch "Incl. ИБМ". During this moment signal lantern ИБМ lights up and whistle ЭПК is distributed. After short-time pressing upper РБ the signal lantern dies away, and whistle ЭПК ceases. Through 55-60 about a whistle and a luminous signal repeat. Pressing upper РБ these signals can be terminated on 4-5 with, and then renew. So happens until the engineman does not insert the connector of the sensors dressed on pins of a hand, into a jack linked to unit IBM. If after that during 1,5—2 mines the luminous signal and whistle ЭПК are absent, means ИБМ is rectified. Sensors have two type sizes and are given individually each engineman.
Along the line at periodic checks of vigilance when on an engineman's indicator burn red, red-yellow, white (switch DZ in a position "АЛСН") white with red-yellow fires, and - also at single-valued checks of vigilance at change of indications of an engineman's indicator the engineman presses lower РБ. At green, yellow, white (switch DZ in a position "Without АЛСН" and downward button ВК) fires periodic check of vigilance is not effected. At development at the engineman of drowsy condition signalling ИБМ is actuated. In this case the engineman should press upper РБ.
If along the line ИБМ went out from a formation (whistles ЭПК do not cease by pressing on РБ, repeating operations ИБМ with periodicity 4—5 from more than 8-10 consecutive times), the engineman switches off its tumbler switch, takes out the connector of sensors from a jack and lifts thimbles from hand pins. Further vigilance checks will happen the usual order determined by other available devices ALCH (УКБМ, Л-143, Л-132). Thus extra appear (as at УКБМ) vigilance checks at green and yellow traffic lights with periodicity 60—90 with, demanding pressing lower РБ.
Scheme ИБМ provides the cessation of periodic and single-valued checks of vigilance at rest and at speed less than 10 km/h, if pressure in braking cylinders not below 2 kgs/sm2.
