[топ]Organisation

The existing FNH system includes 420 km of 914 mm gauge track which was formerly part of the Vaccaro and Standard Fruit system, which was nationalised in 1976. All lines are out of use but not dismantled. The former Tela Railroad lines, 164 km of 1,067 mm gauge, formerly leased to and operated by United Brands Company, were put under FNH control in 1983, but operated as a separate entity until the mid-1990s. About 90 km of this system remain serviceable. The remaining 115 km of 1,067 mm gauge track belongs to FNH and consists mainly of the Puerto Cortes—San Pedro Sula—Potrerillos main line and many smaller branches, of which that from Chamelecon to La Lima is the most important. Most of these lines are in operation or at least extant.
Damage to the railway by Hurricane Mitch principally affected the lines east of Tela and around La Ceiba, where all infrastructure was destroyed. Lines south of Puerto Cortes towards San Pedro Sula were affected to a lesser extent. After some minor repairs, freight services resumed during 1999 between Puerto Cortes and San Pedro Sula and other inland points.

[топ]Passenger operations

After a complete suspension of passenger services in mid-1998, no trains ran for almost 18 months. Early in 2000, FNH reinstated regular scheduled passenger services on the 76 km Puerto Cortes—Tela line with a round-trip every Friday and Sunday.

[топ]Freight operations

Most traffic runs between Puerto Cortes and San Pedro Sula and consists principally of fruit and other agricultural products. Some fertilisers and construction materials are also transported.

[топ]New lines

Nothing has resulted from a project unveiled in 1983 to construct up to 350 route-km of new lines. Work on the planned San Pedro Sula—Yoro line was initiated but halted, but this and other schemes, such as the Puerto Castillo—Sonaguera and Arenal—Rio Bonito lines, remain on the national agenda awaiting an improvement in economic conditions or private investment funds. Some of the projects form part of a scheme for a pan-Central American railway (see entry for Guatemala).

[топ]Traction and rolling stock

The 1,057 mm system is operated with two steam and 34 diesel locomotives, 37 passenger coaches, 22 diesel railcars and 1,960 wagons. The 914 mm fleet comprises eight diesel-electric and two diesel-mechanical locomotives, 17 diesel railcars, 16 passenger coaches and 530 wagons. Operations on the 1,067 mm Tela system are conducted with 28 diesel locomotives, 18 railcars, 70 passenger coaches and 1,324 freight wagons.
