Metro Finalises Subway Extension Plan

15 October 2010

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) in Los Angeles, US, has selected a locally preferred alternative (LPA) route for the proposed Purple Line subway extension to the Westside.

The draft environmental impact report, released last month, includes detailed evaluations of various construction alternatives and includes two options for the Westside subway extension project.

The options would extend the Metro Purple Line from Wilshire/Western to the Westside, while the $4bn LPA plan would extend the subway nine miles to the VA hospital, west of the 405 freeway, and the $3.7bn plan would end the subway at Westwood/UCLA.

Other recommendations include dropping a station at Wilshire/Crenshaw, which would save $153m, and building stations at Fairfax and on the eastside of La Cienega to provide better access to commercial properties in the area.

The Metro board will consider the route in its meeting on 28 October and the LPA will proceed through a final environmental review, preliminary engineering and also compete for federal matching funds.
