The A$33m (US$32.4m) upgrade work on the Dubbo to Coonamble rail line in New South Wales, Australia, began last week.
The work includes the installation of 42,000 steel sleepers between Gilgandra and Coonamble and other major improvements.
The New South Wales Government in Australia, through the Country Rail Infrastructure Authority, will spend A$18.5m(US$18.2m) on re-sleepering work and the renewal of the rail bridge over Coolbaggie Creek at Eumungerie.
The investment will enhance efficiency for the movement of agricultural products along the line, where three major projects to be complete by this financial year will remove a long-standing speed restriction at Eumungerie.
An additional A$14.5m (US$14.2m) has been allocated for completion of the re-railing of the Dubbo to Coonamble line by 2013-14, which will allow heavier trains and increased train speeds on the line.
The upgrades are part of the New South Wales Government's A$155.3m (US$152.5m) 2010-11 budget towards the regional rail network.
