US-based Schindler Group has won a contract to supply equipment for a new rail connection to Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal (GCT) in New York, US.

The connection is an extension of the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), which has a single line into Manhattan.

The project, to be delivered for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Capital Construction Company, will have an initial value of $24m with options of a total value of $70m.

The project includes the installation and maintenance of 22 elevators and 47 escalators, 17 of which are 27m long and six stories high.

The elevators and escalators will be manufactured at Schindler's unit in the US.

The contract is part of the east side access project, which will connect Long Island to the east side of Manhattan.
