Jeddah to Build Tram System

08 October 2010

A SAR21bn ($5.59bn) tram system linking the various residential districts of Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been planned.

The trams will pass through 12 main streets in the city, where the annual operation cost of the system is estimated to be SAR370m ($98.6m).

The implementation of the tram system is part of a new general transport system to be introduced by the kingdom's transport ministry.

The project will be carried out in three phases and also includes commuter and tourist trains, monorails, buses and trams.

The new public transport system project also involves 201 stations, tramcars and the construction of a three-line metro system similar to the one built in Riyadh.
