Indian State Metro Rail Link Gains Momentum

08 October 2010

The planning work for the Ahmedabad Metro rail project in Gujarat, India, is nearing completion as surveys and detailed project reports (DPR) of the project are in their final stages.

The total project will cost in excess of INR100,000m ($2.25bn), while phase I will consider a line between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar cities.

Once completed, the project will carry around 40,000 passengers an hour, while an estimated 1.7 million commuters will use the metro line daily.

The state government has launched a special-purpose vehicle named Metrolink Express for the Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad line, with an authorised capital of INR2000m ($45m) and initial paid-up capital of INR100m ($2m).

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is expected to submit the report soon, following which the final cost and the timeframe will be decided for the project.
