Electric Suburban Train Mock-Up Unveiled in Russia

06 October 2010

A full-scale mock-up of Russian Railways' new electric suburban train was unveiled for public consultation at Moscow's Kazansky station on 1 October.

Russian Railways plans to replace the standard green electric trains with its new electric trains, designed on the technical platform of the Siemens Desiro-Rus train.

The company signed a €410m contract with Siemens on 17 December 2009 for the manufacture and delivery of 38 Lastochka electric suburban trains.

The first train arrived in Russia for testing in February 2010 and all 38 electric trains will be delivered by October 2013 ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Sochi, as well as for running on other lines in central and southern Russia.

The dual-system 160 km/h trains will have five carriages each, with a total capacity of 850 passengers.

The Lastochka train will be produced in Germany at Siemens' Krefeld-Uerdingen plant.
