Bombardier Transportation has won a contract to install a 24km monorail system in São Paulo, Brazil.
The BRL2.46bn ($1.44bn) contract will be delivered for Brazil's state metro authority Companhia do Metropolitano de São Paulo.
The eastern express monorail consortium is led by Brazilian civil contractor Queiroz Galvão and Brazil-based construction firm Construtora, with Bombardier’s share standing at BRL1.4bn ($816m).
The line, Expresso Tiradentes, will serve as an extension of the São Paulo Metro Line 2 and will cut travel time between Vila Prudente and Cidade Tiradentes districts from 2h to 50min.
Bombardier will design and supply system-wide electrical and mechanical elements for the 17-station line, including 54 seven-car trains, using its Cityflo 650 automatic train control technology for driverless operation.
Engineering, design and testing for the rail cars will be done at its site in Kingston, Canada, with initial cars production at Pittsburgh, US, while the remaining cars will be built in Hortolândia, Brazil.
Phase one of the system will open to the public by 2014.
