The Dubai Road Transport Authority has said the proposed tramway system in Dubai, UAE, will be extended to 2014, due to the global economic downturn.
The authority said the downturn in the construction market caused a two-year delay.
The $1.1bn tram system project, spanning a 14-km long network, will be executed in two phases.
The network will include 19 passenger stations, of which nine will be covered under phase I.
The first phase of the project will link Al Sufouh with Dubai Marina by a new bridge, according to arabianbusiness.com.
The authority plans to have 25 trains in place, of which eight will be covered in phase I and 17 in phase II.
Phase 1 of the project was originally expected to be complete by April 2011.
