First Mumbai Metro to Open Next Year

27 September 2010

Mumbai's first metro line will be open by August 2011.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority said construction work on the 11km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar line will be completed by March next year.

Phase I of the project will cost about INR23,560m ($517.2m) and is expected to carry about 600,000 commuters a day.

The authority has said the work is on schedule and that Andheri station will be completed in eight months.

The first set of trains have already arrived and the second set will come from China.

The authority will carry out trial runs from March before opening the line.

Mumbai Metro One, a special-purpose vehicle led by Reliance Infrastructure, is building the line.
