Alstom, Transmashholding Sign Russian Locomotive Contract

24 September 2010

Alstom and Transmashholding have signed a memorandum of understanding at the InnoTrans 2010 exhibition in Berlin, Germany, to develop an AC freight locomotive for Russian Railways.

The long-distance locomotive, with a 2ES5 asynchronous traction motor, will allow Russian Railways to raise the efficiency of its traction rolling stock.

The locomotives will be developed at the Novocherkassk electric locomotive plant in Russia, while the locomotive's key components will be purchased from Russian companies.

A prototype of the locomotive is scheduled to be ready in April 2011 and the supply contract will be signed in 2011.
