The Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA) in the US plans to secure funds from local governments for the installation of a new train safety system that can avoid catastrophic collisions.
SCRRA will receive $120m from five state counties in the coming weeks for installation of the collision-avoidance technology for Metrolink, the SCRRA-operated regional commuter rail system.
The counties will contribute the money for a year under the proposed agreement and the money will be returned to the counties once the state budget is passed.
San Bernardino Associated governments and the Riverside County transportation commission will contribute $12.4m and $10.4m for the new system respectively, while the rest of the amount will be contributed by Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties.
Metrolink will require $202m to install the system in southern California, while the state of California will grant $123.7m towards the project, according to The Press Enterprise.
