US Proposes $50bn Rail Infrastructure Plan

09 September 2010

US President Barack Obama has announced a six-year, $50bn infrastructure plan to expand and renew the nation's rail network.

The plan includes constructing and maintaining 4,000 miles of railway and the integration of high-speed rail into the surface transportation programme.

Funds will be allocated to repair the ageing transit systems and for supporting locally planned and operated transit projects.

The government also plans to invest in a high-speed rail system in order to reduce nation's dependence on oil and reduce pollution.
