Rail Operator Seeks Security Systems Upgrade

08 September 2010

The security surveillance system at Southern Cross Station in Melbourne, Australia, need to be upgraded in line with the latest technology, according to the station's operator.

UK-based company AssetCo, which manages the station, has urged the government to upgrade the system because it poses a security risk for its 120,000 commuters.

The company said the closed-circuit television cameras on the station's platforms and concourse areas are substandard, with many parts of the station receiving no coverage.

The pictures that are captured are also of low quality as individuals cannot be recognised.

AssetCo estimates the upgrade of the system would cost about A$4m, according to theage.com.au.
