US Signs Locomotives Contract with Wabtec Unit

07 September 2010

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in the US has signed a contract with MotivePower, a unit of Wabtec Corporation, for the supply of 20 next-generation HSP46 passenger locomotives.

The $114.63m contract will include the manufacture of EPA Tier 3-compliant locomotives along with the delivery of training, manuals and spare parts.

GE Transportation will work alongside MotivePower to supply the diesel engines, head-end power systems, computer control systems and individual-axle AC traction systems for the locomotives.

The HSP46s will have improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions and lower life-cycle costs compared with DC-traction locomotives.

The locomotives will also include Fastbrake electronic air brakes, air compressors, event recorders, tread brake units, brake shoes, after coolers and radiators developed by Wabtec.

The HSP46s will be delivered in 2012-2013.
