The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association has named Norfolk Southern's Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project the winner of this year's Dr William W Hay Award for Excellence in railway engineering.
The $190m project involves improving capacity, clearances and travel times for freight rail traffic between Chicago, Norfolk and Virginia.
Norfolk Southern has introduced test trains on its upgraded Heartland Corridor between Chicago and Norfolk.
The railway also plans to start scheduled services along the corridor this month, according to rtands.com.
