Vietnam Starts Work on Metro Line

27 August 2010

Vietnam has started the construction of Ho Chi Minh City's Metro line 2.

The 20km line will run from Tay Ninh bus station to Thu Thiem, linking Ben Thanh market in the city centre with Tham Luong in district 12.

The first phase of the $1.2bn project includes digging an 11.5km tunnel at a depth of 18m.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2015 with commercial services starting in 2016.

Funding is being provided partly by the government and from loans from the Overseas Development Administration, Asian Development Bank, and European Investment Bank.
