Floods Hamper Pakistan Railways Service

25 August 2010

Pakistan Railways is facing millions in lost revenue because flooding has suspended several passenger services.

There is a shortage of 50-60 locomotives for freight operations, while the number of available coaches has been reduced to 139, according to recent estimates.

A Rs3.43bn rehabilitation project for 400 passenger coaches is in progress in Islamabad, where 241 coaches were already in service, but the supply of funds is needed to complete the work.

The overall losses from the floods will be estimated after floodwaters flow into the Arabian Sea.
