ABB to Deliver Technology Solution for UK's High-Speed Rail

23 August 2010

ABB has received a contract to provide capacitive compensation solutions to prevent voltage drops along the 25kV catenary supply for the High Speed 1 (HS1) route in the UK.

The solutions will be installed on the 109km-long route from the terminal at St Pancras International in London to the Channel Tunnel at Dover.

The contract covers the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of capacitive compensation filters in nine AC/DC compounds at strategic positions along the line.

HS1 is used by Eurostar trains operating between London, Paris and Brussels and by domestic trains that provide commuter services between London and Kent.

The railway lines are electrified on the 2x25kV principle using autotransformers.
